STEAM Honors Design and Development Senior Capstone Project
Problem Definition:
For food service workers that prepare food, sanitation is critical to their job. Single-use gloves are a fundamental component of personal protective equipment, but their use results in massive amounts of waste.
Solution:
UV-C light has become very popular recently because of its ability to sanitize large areas in a short amount of time. For this project I used UV-C light to eliminate any bacteria on the gloves lengthening there life span.
Original Model Ideas:
At the start of the project I had two different models I was considering. One model resembled a hand dryer, allowing the user to keep the gloves on while they are being cleaned. The other was a box with drawers that requires users to take of the gloves. After looking at this from a business perspective, I chose the box model. This model allows employees to go right back to work after taking of the gloves instead of standing around for three minutes while they are being cleaned. Another benefit is that the box is able to clean multiple pairs of gloves at a time instead of one. At larger businesses only having one station to clean gloves would be problematic because employees wouldn't be able to wait around if someone else was sanitizing their gloves.
